Popcorn Ceiling Removal

How To Remove Popcorn Ceiling Texture

Popcorn ceilings are a kind of ceiling that were quite popularly used in construction in the 50’s through to the 70’s. They are also commonly referred to as cottage cheese ceilings or acoustic ceilings. Popcorn ceilings were applied either by spray painting or painting on, and were popular due to their ability to hide imperfections, as well as their bright white appearance.

As time has passed and building technology has evolved, popcorn ceilings have quickly gone out of style, and are often thought to make a space seem a lot older than it actually is. Popcorn ceilings are also notorious for making rooms look darker due to the multiple shadows created by the popcorn effect. As a result, many people are now opting to get rid of their popcorn ceilings in favor of more visually appealing styles.

There are a few methods that you can use to get rid of your popcorn ceiling in the event that you are looking to get something new. If you would like to take this on as a DIY (do it yourself) project, the simplest method to use is the soak and scrape method.

Step 1:

To get this done, you will need to begin by removing any movable furniture and covering any fixtures with polythene paper. This will ensure none of your furniture gets damaged in the process, and will also give you a much easier time when you need to clean up after completing the project.

Step 2:

Next, you will need either a spray bottle or a spray hose, and water. This is what you will use to soak the ceiling in order to make it easier to scrape the popcorn ceiling off. When doing the soaking, it is better to work in smaller areas in order to ensure that the ceiling is absorbing as much water as possible, while also ensuring that you don’t over saturate the ceiling with water which may damage the ceiling boards.

Step3:

remove popcorn ceilingOnce you are done spraying, let the water soak for about 10-15 minutes and then begin scraping the ceiling with a texture scraper. You can use a smaller putty knife to scrape the corners. Again, to ensure you do a good job it is better to divide the ceiling into small sections and scrape each section as you move along.

If you would still like to have a textured ceiling, but have it look and feel more modern, you can always consider using textured paint. It is important to keep in mind that textured paint will not hide any imperfections caused by a poor popcorn ceiling removal job. It is therefore of utmost importance that once you pay keen attention to the removal process and make sure you fix any issues before applying the textured paint.

Once you have taken down the popcorn ceiling, you will need to sand paper the entire ceiling to ensure a smooth and even surface. Once the sanding has been well done, it is also important that you prime the surface before you can even consider applying the paint. You can use any good commercial paint primer to get this done. This will ensure that once you apply the textured paint, there will be no imperfections from the previous job showing through the new paint job any imperfections. With this, you should be able to achieve a new, modern look for your rooms.
